getting there and away

Orangeways bus company offers rides to many European cities for a very cheap price. The busses are really comfortable and you even get free coffee.

Buy the tickets online or directly at the bus.
The bus stop is at Nepliget - not the bus station, but at the corner of the stadion (FTC)

changing money

there is a changing machine at Oktogon, but I found the rate to be more expensive than the one at the exchange offices (they are even cheaper than banks). There is one located right on Oktogon and one on Erzsebet korut.

markets

WAMP
Hungarian design market, takes place once every month on Erzsébet square. They also do parties.
http://www.wamp.hu/en/

Ecseri flea market
Excellent stuff there - lots of nice furniture, but also old cameras and film equipment - quite cheap. wouldn't recommend shopping for clothes - they're crap.
take bus 55 or 56 from Boraros square to Fiume (takes about 20 minutes)
Nagykorösi ut 156

laundromat

There is one next to the youth hostel in O street, but it ist quite expensive. HUF 1800 for washing (max. 9 kg.). opening times: Mo-FR 9am-7pm, Sa/Su 10am - 4pm
O utca 24-26 (map)

Apparently there is also one called Iriz-Szalon in Varoshaz u. 3-5, but I didn't go there. (map)

galleries & museums

First of all try to get the "Index", a monthly gallery guide that includes almost all interesting places of art. Opening times are usually Tuesday to Saturday. You can check their programme on the Internet, those are the ones that I found worth visiting:

Studio gallery
Artist run space and young artist's association. Offers studios and residencies also and has an interesting programme as well als publications. (map)

Trafo gallery
Gallery in the Trafo cultural center. Seems to have a focus on political/critical art, offers a very interesting perspective though. (map)

Kitchen Budapest
very interesting gallery/lab for digital art. Organizes workshops and lectures and offers positions for researchers in this field. (map)

Videospace Budapest
(map)

Mucsarnok/Kunsthalle
biggest institution for contemporary art. Located next to fine arts museum, quite interesting programme. (map)

Ludwig Muzeum
Huge space sponsored by the Ludwig Foundation (Germany). Various temporary exhibtions, seemed a bit commercial to me when I was there.

Lumen Photo Gallery
Don't go there only to see the exhibiton cause it's really small, but it is interesting and a very nice place to take a coffee.

urban exploring

places I found interesting to explore

Csepeli factory
old factory, it's huge, like a city in it's own. amazing place to take photos
You get there by taking the Hév from Boraros square, it's the 3rd sotp, (Szent Imre ter)

Hugaria fürdo (Hungaria bath)
An old bath which is partly demolished and used to be location for performances of the Ujlak group.
(map)
Obudai Island
Losts of abandonded houses and a film studio

Shopping center Westend (not very nice but useful if you need all kinds of different things - there's Media Markt (on the back side, 1st floor; still cheapest to buy cds, dvds etc.) and a paper shop called Green Papir (on ground floor, left side)
(map)

Do-it-yourself-store
There is a small shop called barkacsbolt in a cellar in Nagy Diofa street right after the corner with Wesselenyi street. They have mostly small stuff, for the big things you'll have to go to OBI or Praktiker

Book stores

Irók Boltja
Situated in the building of what used to be Café Japan, this is the most renowned book store in Budapest with a variety of English and Art books.
Andrassy ut 45 (map)

Gay-friendly café/resto-lounge with good food and nice changing exhibitions.

Epistesz pince Etterem

Restaurant located in an amazingly beautiful yard with great vegetarian dishes.
(map)

Tadar
Very traditional restaurant where the workers from next door seem to have lunch. Not recommended for Vegetarians.
Klauzal ter 12 (I think). (map)

You might also find a nice bar in Ráday street and on Liszt square but they seemed a bit touristy to me.

Bars, Clubs

In case you come to Budapest in summer (May - September) you definitely have to visit as many of the so called "romkocsma" (bars in ruins) as possible. They are bars in abandoned houses and keep changing (some closing down, some new ones opening) but those are the ones that I enjoyed most:

Yard Bars:
Kuplung
It looks a bit "industrial", but is really cool. good electronic music in a big hall and some tables in the yard.
http://kuplung.net/
Király utca 46 (map)

Szimpla garden
Some locals say it got very touristy and commercial lately, but it still is one of the coolest places around with a really big garden and a beautiful 1st floor. there's great decoration, random video screenings and even a trabi transformed into a bench and is indie-ish music.

apparently they also have a design market every second sunday.
Kazinczy u. 14 (map)
http://www.szimpla.hu/index_en.htm

Mumus

Recently opened and also really nicely decorated, but the music was not too exciting.
Dob utca 18 (map)

Jelen
Cool underground bar with jazz and experimental music and a really high ceiling. It's actually located on the back side of the warehouse on the corner to stahly utca.
Blaha Lujza tér 1-2 (map)

Szoda
Another cool bar in the Jewish quarter.
Wesselényi u. 18 (map)

Clubs

Corvinteto
It's located on top of a warehouse and the best place in town for electronic music. You go up in an elevator where you can even buy shots or walk up the stairs. There's a terrace on top of the building with a cool view over the city. Downstairs there's the small but fancy club.
the Entrance is on somogyi bela utca.
Blaha Luza ter 1-2 (map)

Gödör club
Funny mensa-like club with mostly ethno-music. Sometimes they have amazing Balkan Beat Parties. Big and crowded terrace outside.
Erzsebet ter (map)
http://www.godorklub.hu/

Trafo
Great cultural center where you can visit exhibitons, (experimental) dance theatre
http://www.trafo.hu/
Liliom str. 41 (map)

Piaf
A really strange non-stop bar. Upstairs you can listen to a women singing chansons with a really funny accent, downstairs you can dance to music you d never dare to if you were sober. Only recommended if you wanna experience something very different or are already drunk.
25 Nagymezo utca (map)

Places I still wanna go to
