getting there and away

Orangeways bus company offers rides to many European cities for a very cheap price. The busses are really comfortable and you even get free coffee.

Buy the tickets online or directly at the bus.
The bus stop is at Nepliget - not the bus station, but at the corner of the stadion (FTC)

changing money

there is a changing machine at Oktogon, but I found the rate to be more expensive than the one at the exchange offices (they are even cheaper than banks). There is one located right on Oktogon and one on Erzsebet korut.

markets

WAMP
Hungarian design market, takes place once every month on Erzsébet square. They also do parties.

Ecseri flea market
Excellent stuff there - lots of nice furniture, but also old cameras and film equipment - quite cheap. wouldn't recommend shopping for clothes - they're crap.
take bus 55 or 56 from Boraros square to Fiume (takes about 20 minutes)
Nagykorösi ut 156

laundromat

There is one next to the youth hostel in O street, but it ist quite expensive. HUF 1800 for washing (max. 9 kg.). opening times: Mo-FR 9am-7pm, Sa/Su 10am - 4pm
O utca 24-26 (map)

Apparently there is also one called Iriz-Szalon in Varoshaz u. 3-5, but I didn't go there. (map)

galleries & museums

First of all try to get the "Index", a monthly gallery guide that includes almost all interesting places of art. Opening times are usually Tuesday to Saturday. You can check their programme on the Internet, those are the ones that I found worth visiting:

Studio gallery
Artist run space and young artist's association. Offers studios and residencies also and has an interesting programme as well als publications. (map)

Trafo gallery
Gallery in the Trafo cultural center. Seems to have a focus on political/critical art, offers a very interesting perspective though. (map)

Kitchen Budapest
very interesting gallery/lab for digital art. Organizes workshops and lectures and offers positions for researchers in this field. (map)

Videospace Budapest
(map)

Mucsarnok/Kunsthalle
biggest institution for contemporary art. Located next to fine arts museum, quite interesting programme. (map)

Ludwig Muzeum
Huge space sponsored by the Ludwig Foundation (Germany). Various temporary exhibtions, seemed a bit commercial to me when I was there.

Lumen Photo Gallery
Don't go there only to see the exhibiton cause it's really small, but it is interesting and a very nice place to take a coffee.
